How to Find Dry Tinder After Rain
Purpose — Search standing dead wood before the forest floor, then split to the dry core before judging any material.
FIELD CHECKLIST
- Standing dead branches, snap-tested at chest height or above
- Split or batoned to expose dry interior wood
- Feather-stick shavings that curl tightly, not tear
- Leeward/sheltered side of large trunks checked
- Touch-test confirms warm-neutral, brittle material before processing
RED FLAGS — STOP AND RECHECK
- Material that bends rather than snaps cleanly
- Shavings that tear or feel cool and damp
DECISION RULE
Fails the snap test: keep searching. Passes: split and shave before judging further.
