How to Build a Ground Bed That Keeps You Warm

OFFLINE · PRINT-READY

Purpose — Build ground insulation that actually survives your body weight through a full night.

FIELD CHECKLIST
  • Coarse base layer (boughs or sticks) laid first for an air gap
  • Thick top layer of dry leaves, grass, or needles added over the base
  • Bed press-tested at hips and shoulders under full body weight
  • Bed extends your full lying length, head to feet
  • Thin or bare spots re-thickened before finishing the shelter
RED FLAGS — STOP AND RECHECK
  • Bed material that looks thick but flattens completely when you sit on it
  • Bare ground visible at the head or foot end once you lie down fully
DECISION RULE

Feel the ground through the bed anywhere under full weight? Add material there before doing anything else.

COMMON MISTAKES
  • Judging the bed by how it looks, not how it presses
  • Sizing the bed to the shelter floor instead of your own body length
SAFETY NOTE
BEFORE YOU ACT ON THIS SHEETWet or rotting ground material insulates poorly even when piled thick — prioritize dry material over sheer volume.
EMERGENCY REMINDERIf you're losing heat overnight and can't rebuild the bed in the dark, prioritize insulating your hips and core first — that's where conductive heat loss hurts you fastest.
