Animal Trails That Lead to Water
Purpose — Use trail directness and convergence to narrow a water search, then confirm before committing to follow one far.
FIELD CHECKLIST
- Trail is narrow, direct, and shows consistent repeated use
- Two or more trails converge toward one point
- Convergence point sits near a slope break or vegetation change
- Fresh tracks or sign confirm current, active use
- Muddy/churned ground at the trail's end, not just damp
RED FLAGS — STOP AND RECHECK
- Trail fades or narrows into an unremarkable clearing (likely a bedding area, not water)
- No fresh sign at all despite a well-worn appearance (may be seasonal/dried up)
DECISION RULE
Single wandering trail: low priority. Two+ converging, steepening trails: worth following.
- Following the first trail without comparing others
- Camping at the water source itself
- Assuming a trail guarantees drinkable water
